Governor Victor Basargin congratulated war veterans and home front workers with the Day of Military Glory of Russia - the 70th anniversary of the breaking the blockade of Leningrad.
"The day of breaking the blockade of Leningrad is one of the most significant events in the Great Patriotic War, the day of remembrance of all victims and effort that the country made defending the northern capital. Leningrad people became an example of courage, heroism and true patriotism for the world.
This year we celebrate the 70th anniversary of breaking the blockade. We remember the feat of courage and heroism of those who gave their life, health and strength, protecting the city on the Neva River, ensuring the work of its defense industry and assisting residents. No matter how many years have passed since January 1944, we will always remember the defenders, workers and residents of besieged Leningrad.
The whole country helped Leningrad to hold out. Many links connect the Perm region with the pages of Leningrad defense history.
In the ranks of the troops defending the city on the Neva River, there were many of our fellow-townsmen. Among the military units, there was the 21st Perm Infantry Division. The 379th Infantry Division from Prikamye participated in breaking the blockade. The 934th Artillery Regiment of the Division was awarded the Order of the Red Banner for the courage and bravery shown in combat.
107,000 people evacuated from Leningrad were resettled In the Perm, then Molotov, region. 78 boarding schools and 50 kindergartens from the city on the Neva were evacuated to the area. Permians collected tens of thousands of pieces of clothing and shoes to help the evacuees. In general, 379,000 Leningrad residents passed through the Perm evacuation center.
The region hosted the Shipbuilding Yard, the Goznak Paper Mill, the Gorky Paper Mill, the Telephone Factory and other Leningrad enterprises.
Educational institutions and research institutes also moved to Prikamye, including S.M. Kirov Leningrad Infantry School, All-Union Research Institute of Flax and All-Union Institute of Physics and Agronomy from Leningrad.
Fifteen hundred paintings from the State Russian Museum were placed in the Perm Art Gallery, SM Kirov Opera and Ballet Theatre was provided the stage at Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre. The Ballet School and the staff of the Leningrad Youth Theater were evacuated to Molotov.
Many of Leningrad residents who came to our region linked their destiny with it.
Today there are 204 people in the Perm region who were awarded the "Resident of Besieged Leningrad" badge. We are bowing down to them.
It is our duty to show respect to veterans and those whose fate was linked to military service and defense of the country; to do everything so that those who survived the terrible years of blockade and passed through the inhuman suffering got the deserved care and attention.
On the Day of Military Glory of Russia, I wish you, dear veterans and home front workers, residents of besieged Leningrad good health, longevity and prosperity!" Victor Basargin’s statement says.
